Choose the right quality rug for the room

• This all depends on how much wear the rug is going to get. For example, you will need a more hardwearing rug for busy areas such as the hall, stairs and landing than in the bedroom. • Buy an anti-slip underlay to go beneath your rug. Underlays not only prevent a rug from slipping, they also reduce wear and tear, muffle noise and make vacuuming easier.

• Pure wool is the classic rug fibre. It's soft, doesn't flatten easily and keeps its appearance well. Nylon is very strong, also doesn't flatten easily and can be blended with wool. Polypropylene is very durable and also bleach resistant. You can get other blends of rug fibres, each with different properties—some wear better than others, some stain less easily and so on.

• The best quality rugs—and the most expensive—are woven rugs, where the front and back are woven simultaneously. However, most rugs sold in the UK and Ireland are tufted, where the yarn is inserted into a ready-made backing fabric. Machine made rugs are usually made in Belgium and offer good value for money.
